The Orlando Sentinel reported today that U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) officials and immigrant activists are surprised at the low number of applications for Temporary Protected Status (TPS), an immigration benefit that President Obama authorized for Haitian nationals in light of the earthquake that ravaged that country on January 12, 2010.

The Orlando Sentinel reported that the U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) will begin accepting applications for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) applications today for Haitian nationals due to the earthquake that ravaged that country last week.
USCIS officials estimate that about 200,000 Haitian TPS applications will be received during the six (6) month registration period that was authorized by the government.

The U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) as part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced this past weekend that Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is now authorized for Haitian nationals. The regulations will be published in the Federal Register as soon as possible.

The Orlando Sentinel reported today that in the wake of Tuesday’s earthquake in Haiti, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a directive to temporarily stop all deportations to Haiti. This was a joint decision made by the DHS Secretary Napolitano and Assistant Secretary Morton of the U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (USICE).
