Florida Lawmakers Consider Proposing an Arizona Style Immigration Law

immigration reform 2The Orlando Sentinel reported yesterday that earlier this week, the U.S. Justice Department filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the Arizona immigration law that will become effective on July 29th.  The law will authorize law enforcement while enforcing another law such as a traffic violation, to question the immigration status of the individual stopped if law enforcement reasonably suspects he or she is  an undocumented immigrant.

Some Republican lawmakers in Florida have indicated that they’d like to propose legislation to have a similar law in Florida.  Additionally, Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum and Rick Scott who are campaigning to become the next Governor, propose an Arizona style law in Florida.

The American people are frustrated that the immigration problem continues to grow and the federal government hasn’t done enough to resolve the problem.  The State of Arizona felt that by passing their immigration law, it was doing what the federal government failed to do.  However, enforcement of the immigration laws is the responsibility of the federal government, not a state government.

Immigration reform has gotten the attention it deserves.  The President has recently reaffirmed his commitment to resolving the immigration problem and, we hope that legislation will be passed soon to reform the immigration laws once and for all.
