The Orlando Sentinel reported today that to date, the U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) had received more than 50,000 applications from Haitian nationals who registered for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). The registration period ends on July 20, 2010 and is open only to undocumented Haitians who were already residing in the U.S. on January 12, 2010, the day the earthquake ravaged that country.
According to the article, immigration officials initially estimated that between 100,000 and 200,000 Haitians would apply for TPS. However, that estimate is the amount of applications the USCIS has the resources to adjudicate.
There are 39 days left before the registration period for TPS closes. USCIS officials estimate that about 70,000 applications will be received in the final days of the registration period.
We at Pappas & Associates, P.A. urge all eligible Haitian nationals to submit their applications and, to ensure they are received by the USCIS well before July 20th deadline.
