The Orlando Sentinel reported today that the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted yesterday to ban new contracts with companies headquartered in Arizona and, to review contracts that the county could cancel.
The decision resulted in Los Angeles County to become the most recent governmental entity protest Arizona’s harsh new law criminalizing the presence of undocumented immigrants. The city governments of Los Angeles, Oakland, and San Francisco have also indicated their opposition to the new law.
Starting on July 29, 2010, Arizona law enforcement will be required to question, apprehend, and detain anyone who is believed to be residing in the U.S. illegally.
Recently, officials from the U.S. Department of Justice indicated their intent to draft a legal challenge to the law claiming that it is unconstitutional because it inhibits the federal government’s authority to protect the country’s borders, hence, the enforcement of the immigration laws.
Overall, the Arizona law will face legal challenges, there will be more protests, and, is already seeing an outcry from immigration advocates and their supporters.
