The New York Times reported recently that the federal government will file a lawsuit to challenge the new Arizona immigration law that is scheduled to become effective on July 29th. The law authorizes Arizona law enforcement to inquire about the immigration status of any individual they arrest, detain, or question that is reasonably suspected of being in the U.S. illegally.
The federal government rarely intervenes in a state’s affairs. However, on the occassions it has intervened, the issues were over state laws that the federal government feels are discriminatory or infringes on certain rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.
The issue at hand is whether Arizona’s enforcement of federal immigration laws is constitutional.
