The Orlando Sentinel reported today that the Arizona immigration law that will become effective next month has drawn a lot of attention to the politically sensitive issue of immigration reform.
The timing of the law has put federal lawmakers in a difficult position. Lawmakers must decide whether they will draft legislation and pass comprehensive immigration reform or, to set the matter aside and focus on keeping their seats in Congress because of mid-term elections.
Since April when the law was signed, there have been protests, lawsuits have been filed challenging the law, boycotts against Arizona’s businesses and the state as a whole are under way and, legislatures in about 20 states are contemplating passing similar laws.
Overall, the American public is frustrated with the growing immigration problem. The people of Arizona have taken it upon themselves to do something about this problem and a law was made. However, we must all be reminded that the immigration problem can only be resolved by the federal government.
It seems that the Arizona law awoke the dormant issue of immigration reform that has now become the center of attention.
