The New York Times reported this past weekend that Senate majority leader, Harry Reid told demonstrators at an immigration reform rally in Las Vegas that he will take the immigration reform fight to Congress when they return this week from a recess.
The rally in Las Vegas was among the largest of the demonstrations that took place this past Saturday. Rallies also took place in seven other cities. Demonstrators in Las Vegas expressed their frustration with the President for not pressing hard enough to pass immigration reform-something he promised to do within his first year in office.
Senator Reid feels that he has the support needed to have an immigration reform bill in place this year, but also believes that he will need additional Republican support.
Immigration reform failed to pass in 2006 and 2007. The issue seems to now be at the forefront as lawmakers have been hearing pleas from demonstrators at numerous ralles across the country and, as a result, are feeling the pressure to act.
