The New York Times reported yesterday that Texas Appleseed, a public interest law center and Akin Gump, a corporate law firm co-wrote a report that is scheduled to be released today concerning the due process rights of disabled immigrant detainees facing deportation.
The report shows that the detainees, mostly from New York and other areas in the northeast, even some from mental hospitals, have been transferred to immigration detention facilities in remote areas of Texas without their medication, medical records resulting in limited access to relatives and representation.
The report also shows that the limited mental capacity of the detainees is not taken into consideration plus, officials rush their cases through the immigration court system like any other detention case.
We at Pappas & Associates, P.A. applaud the writers of the report for bringing to light the additional difficulties this vulnerable group of immigrants face when their mental capacity limits their ability to preserve their due process rights when facing deportation.
