The New York Times reported that according to officials from the U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS), about 34,000 of the estimated 100,000 to 200,000 undocumented Haitians who were in the United States before the January 12, 2010 earthquake that ravaged that country have come forward and applied for Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
Immigrant advocate groups have said that Haitians have been hesitant to apply because the filing fees total $ 470. For many, that is an entire paycheck. Others have said that many haven’t applied because the criteria for requesting a filing fee waiver is too high.
We at Pappas & Associates call on all eligible Haitian nationals to come forward and apply for TPS before the deadline of July 19, 2010. A grant of TPS will provide the temporary protection from deportation and, will provide the work authorization these people so desperately need.
