Immigrant Activists Coming Together to Call for Immigration Reform

immigration reformThe Los Angeles Times reported today that immigrant advocate groups and their supporters are coming together to rally this coming Sunday, March 21, 2010 at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. to propose lawmakers an ultimatum.  Either pass passing immigration reform or, face a significant loss of voter support from Latino communities across the U.S. come mid-term elections later this year.

In light of the Latino community’s frustration and feelings of betrayal from lawmakers, the President, and his administration, they say that it is time for action and the time for promises of immigration reform is over.

It is time that something be done.  If immigration reform doesn’t pass this year, there are measures that the President can take that do not require Congressional authority to reform the country’s immigration laws.  A primary example of this, is that the President can reauthorize the LIFE Act  and hence undocumented immigrants can obtain permanent residence (green cards)  under section 245(i) of the immigration law without leaving the U.S.

Despite the additional problems our nation is tackling such as health care reform, the downturn in the economy, rising unemployment, and the war on terror, immigration reform falls under the category of hot button issues that must be given the attention that is due.
