The Washington Times reported today that the number of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. shrunk by approximately 1 million in the past 2 years as a result of the Bush administration’s increased enforcement efforts. Additionally, the fact that the economy spiraled downward, also contributed to the reduction in the undocumented immigrant population according to a report released yesterday by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
In the report, DHS analysts have said that the reduction in the undocumented immigrant population stems from the fact that undocumented immigrants returned to their home countries, and that fewer attempted to cross the border.
Many have said that this information would be very useful later this year if and when immigration reform takes place this year.
According to the article, in December of last year, DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said the increased enforcement has proven to be effective, and the government can in fact secure our nations borders. On the other hand, she also mentioned that the time is right to discuss passing a bill to legalize the undocumented immigrant population.
The information contained in the report was very interesting. Realistically though, we must all wait and see how much of an impact it will have in the fight to reform our nation’s immigration laws.
