The Miami Herald reported today that the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) is turning up the heat to pressure President Obama and his administration to do what is necessary to legalize the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants this year.
The Catholic Church in the U.S. has historically favored immigration reform. Its recent efforts to push the immigration reform issue confirmed its commitment to the issue. The Obama administration has already indicated that immigration reform could be the next major legislative priority after health care reform.
Immigration reform is gaining momentum once again. This time around, more people including lobbyists, non-profit organizations, and students are becoming more involved and are organizing rallies in various areas of the country.
The comprehensive balance for immigration reform to become a reality must be found in order to protect our nation’s borders, enhance national security and at the same time, grant benefits to keep immigrant families together.
