The New York Times reported recently that four immigrant students on New Year’s Day began a 1,500 mile walk from downtown Miami to Washington, D.C. to raise awareness to what they say is that the Obama administration is moving slowly to pass legislation that will reform our country’s immigration laws to grant legal status to the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S.
Supporters and well wishers who were present at a small gathering of about 100 people on the steps of the Freedom Tower in Miami are concerned that three of the four students are undocumented. Some say that they are exposing themselves to detection and apprehension from the U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (USICE). However, the students felt that the exposure to immigration officials while on their walk is part of the risk they are taking and are ready for whatever comes.
The students plan to reach our nation’s capital on May 1, 2010, the date of the annual May Day immigration rally.
