The New York Times reported today that New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg pledged that he will promote a more open U.S. immigration policy during his now third term in office in light of legislation extending term limits as mayor from 2 to 3.
At the mayor’s swearing in ceremony recently, he mentioned that he we will assemble a bipartisan coalition to support the President’s push for immigration reform to happen this year.
We have reported in earlier posts that the President has begun to work on this issue in the hopes that immigration reform will pass this year. The White House has already said that it will work on immigration reform to legalize the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants already in the U.S.
Since a leader of a major U.S. city has pledged his support to reform our country’s immigration laws, we will wait and see if leaders from other cities will follow suit.
