The Miami Herald reported today that in light of the rising unemployment rate (approximately 10%), an all important question has come up in the immigration reform debate. That question is, “Will legalizing millions of undocumented immigrants further hurt or help the economy?”
The answer is difficult to come by due to conflicting reports that were issued recently. One such report released last week endorsed by America’s Voice, a pro-immigration group said that legalization of the estimated 12 million undocumented immigrants would boost the economy.
On the other hand, a report issued last month by the Center for Immmigration Studies, an organization that promotes increased immigration enforcement has said that less-educated U.S. workers will have a more difficult time to obtain jobs if undocumented immigrants are legalized.
As with any other major legislation change, there will be conflicting reports, debates, marches and rallies both for and against immigration reform.
Therefore, we as the American public must take into consideration the day to day effects of legalizing millions of undocumented immigrants. The American public must also raise their awareness of this important issue and decide for themselves whether legalizing millions of undocumented immigrants will help or hurt their pockets.
