The U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) announced today that DHS Secretary Napolitano in conjunction with the U.S. Department of State (DOS)that humanitarian parole is now authorized to allow orphaned Haitian children to come to the United States on a temporary basis as part of the ongoing support of recovery efforts in the wake of last week’s 7.0 magnitude earthquake that ravaged Haiti.
Both government agencies are issuing issue travel documents in the form of immigrant visas for adopted children of U.S. citizens, or humanitarian parole for children children who are in the adoption process.
Once these children have been identified and are authorized to travel, they will be brought to the U.S. to be united with their new American parents.
It is understood that there are orphaned children in Haiti who won’t qualify for these benefits. The relevant government agencies will identify those children and evaluate their circumstances to determine whether any additional criteria would be established to provide immigration benefits to those children.
