Application Period for U Visas Ending

vawa 2The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) reported today that it has intentions to terminate the U non-immigrant visa interim relief program. The U visa classification was authorized to allow victims of certain crimes to receive temporary benefits until regulations concerning U visas were published.  On October 17, 2007, the USCIS published the U visa regulations.

The USCIS will terminate the U non-immigrant visa interim relief for individuals who were granted interim relief, but who have not filed an application for a U visa by December 31, 2009.

The U visa grants protection from deportation, crime victims who come forward and assist law enforcement to investigate and aid in the prosecution of their perpetrators who are charged with domestic violence, various types of assault, trafficking, or other crimes.
