The US Immigration & Customs Enforcement (USICE) reported that a Los Angeles doctor was arrested earlier this week for signing the results of medical and lab tests that he claimed to have performed on foreign nationals applying for permanent residence (green cards).
Foreign nationals applying for green cards must have a medical exam done to ensure that they do not have any medical conditions that would make them inadmissible to the U.S. The immigration law requires for foreign nationals to show proof that they have been vaccinated against certain diseases and tested for others, for example, Tuberculosis (TB) and HIV.
This doctor’s arrest was the result of a joint investigation by USICE and the California Medical Board (CMB). The agencies began their investigation based on a tip from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services’ (USCIS’), Fraud Detection Unit .
