Supporters of the DREAM Act Uniting
The Miami Herald reported today that supporters of the DREAM Act are uniting to lobby the government to focus its attention on this legislation.
For example, 25-year old Lizbeth Mateo, a native of Mexico and an undocumented immigrant who has lived in the U.S. for over ten years, earned a bachelor’s degree last year from California State University. Now that she has a degree, she cannot find a job in her field of study because of her immigration status.
She is one of many like her who came to the U.S. as children, grew up here, graduated high school, some even graduated college, and is hoping for one day for the dream to achieve permanent residence (green card) become a reality.
The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act also known as the DREAM Act failed to pass in the Senate two years ago. Now that it was reintroduced in Congress earlier this year, many undocumented students like Lizbeth are waiting for this legislation to become law.
To unite supporters, Lizbeth and others like her have taken to the Internet’s social networks to spread their message and even formed a coalition called United We Dream .
Supporters are hopeful that lawmakers would pass the DREAM Act into law sometime next year, either as part of comprehensive immigration reform or as a stand alone bill.
