The Orlando Sentinel reported that a group of about 200 high school students will take part in a one-mile march at 1:30 p.m. calling on the government to pass immigration reform.
The students will march from Apopka High School to the Hope Community Center where the area’s immigrant farmworkers’ ministry is based.
The students are calling for passage of The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act, also known as the “DREAM Act” that would amend the immigration laws to allow high school graduates and other young people to legalize their immigration status.
Many of these young undocumented immigrants were brought to the United States by their parents when they were very young. Now that these individuals are of college age, they find themselves unable to attend college, join the workforce, or serve in our nation’s military because they lack valid immigration status.
Immigrant advocacy groups estimate that approximately 65,000 undocumented students would benefit from the passage of the DREAM Act.
