The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (USICE) announced yesterday that a $40,000 fine settlement was agreed between the USICE and the Krispy Kreme Doughnut Corporation for violations of the immigration laws relating to the employment of unauthorized workers.
The USICE conducted an audit of the Forms I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification) Krispy Kreme had on file after receiving information prompting an investigation that resulted in the USICE officials discovering that the company employed dozens of illegal immigrants at one of their doughnut factories in Cincinnati, OH.
U.S. based employers are required to complete and retain I-9′s for each individual hired for employment in the United States. The form requires employers to review and record the individual’s identity documents, determine whether the documents appear to be genuine, related to the individual and hence, establishes the individual’s eligibility to be employed in the U.S.
