The Mercury News reported recently that Immigration Reform is making a comeback as a hot button issue. The concern among advocates for immigration reform is whether it becomes legislation this year, next year, or at all.
The Obama administration and Congress is currently working on legislation to pass a war spending bill, reform health care, address global warming, and more recently, confirming Sonia Sotomayor as a Supreme Court Justice.
The Obama Administration had planned to meet with groups advocating immigration reform, including a path to legalize the status of about 11 million illegal immigrants.
The meeting was originally scheduled for June 8th, but has now been postponed indefinitely. White House officials are currently working to have a war spending bill passed by Congress. Immigration advocates were disappointed at the delay, but hope that the President will continue to work to resolve the immigration problem.
Many in Congress are reluctant to tackle the immigration problem again after three years of proposals and debates that resulted in no resolution.
Since 2006, advocates for immigration reform have held street rallies across the country urging the government to pass comprehensive legislation to resolve the nation’s immigration problem once and for all.
