President Obama’s Remarks on Immigration Reform

The White House released President Obama’s remarks following a meeting yesteday with congressional leaders about immigration reform.

The President had asked DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano to lead a group that would be working with leaders from both chambers of Congress to draft legislation that would reform the nation’s immigration laws.

Additionally, the President asked that in the next 3 months, for the US Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS) to improve their website (www.uscis.gov) that will for the first time ever, allow applicants to get updates on their status of their applications via e-mail and text message and online.

Immigration reform has been and continues to be a sensitive and politically volatile issue.  Acknowledging that a tremendous amount of work will need to be done, the country and the government are in a position to work together to once and for all pass comprehensive immigration.
